Pressure injuries, often by the very nature of their causation, and location, are historically at high risk for colonization by bacteria, and ultimately deeper seeded infections of both the surrounding soft tissues and bone. This webinar will look at defining that risk, the factors that place them at risk, and steps to prevent and treat. The time spent will focus on identifying tissues placing them at high risk, local measures to reduce the bioburden through therapeutic cleansing and debridement, and accurate assessment of the wound and surrounding area for clinical signs of infection.

2. Describe the current approach to accomplishing therapeutic wound cleansing.
3. Discuss the concept of integral debridement and how this is especially critical in pressure injury care.

Lee Ruotsi, MD, CWS-P, UHM

Dr. Ruotsi is the Medical Director of The Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Holland Hospital in Holland, Michigan. In this role he is responsible for clinical oversight and patient care in the department. He is board certified in Wound Care by the American Board of Wound Medicine and Surgery, is certified as a Wound Specialist (CWS-P) by the American Board of Wound Management, and is board certified in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is additionally certified as a Diving Medical Officer (DMO) by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He completed two, three-year terms on the Board of Directors of the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) and was chair of its Education Committee as well as the Public Policy Committee. He is a Founding Diplomate and emeritus board member of the American Board of Wound Medicine and Surgery. He is a member of the CLI Global Wound Care Board, the Wound Healing Society (WHS), is a faculty member of the Wound Certification Prep Course, and lectures nationally as well as internationally on topics related to wound care and hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Ruotsi lives with his wife, Dot and 2 dogs in Holland, Michigan.

Dot Weir, RN, CWON, CWS

Dot has spent over 4 decades in the practice of ostomy and wound care in all sites of care and has practiced for the past 25 years in outpatient care. She is currently a clinician with Holland Hospital Wound and Hyperbaric Medicine. Among many activities, Dot is the Co-Chair of the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care, on the faculty of the Wound Certification Prep Course, is a member of the International Wound Infection Institute Committee, Board of Directors of (CARS: Coalition for At Risk Skin), speaks nationally and internationally on all aspects of wound management, and has authored and co-authored many papers and 15 book chapters.
