The location of most pressure injuries escalates the likelihood for bacterial growth and the potential for infection. Attention to the details of cleansing, debridement and topical management are paramount to maintaining tolerable levels of bacteria. This presentation will discuss appropriate wound hygiene, clinical decision making related to infection, culturing with the intent to treat, and the importance of supporting antimicrobial stewardship through the appropriate use of dressings.
Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the infection continuum as it relates to pressure injuries.
- Summarize the steps in wound hygiene/ wound bed preparation.
- Explain the challenges and recommendations for obtaining a wound culture.
- Discuss the appropriate use of topical antimicrobial agents.
